The Characteristics of Density Distribution and Densification on Medium and Small Indonesian Municipalities

While many studies on urban compactness measured built-up area (intensity), this study explored population density in forms of gradients. Also, medium and small cities (in case, municipalities due to having autonomous economies), through inquiring their characteristics common, could provide early insights for anticipating further growths. Density database was made, combined with cadastral data. Two kinds growth pattern (i.e. concentric linear) were comprehended extract gradient patterns from the using three indices. Through assigning a time span (2010–2018), densification rates also derived. The results indicate that there transformation linear while populations increased, yet not rare total sprawling. Besides, influences states how are positioned among others within local clusters where, one hand, being too close large would promote sprawling long term while, other surrounded evenly by is likely advantageous.
